This kitchen renovation was a delight: out with a dated ‘country kitchen’ and in with a functional layout with elegant, durable details and finishings.
The new design for this kitchen is a blend of traditional and contemporary; a unique mix of shaker style custom cabinetry with traditional mouldings make the space feel classic and elegant. The island and bulkhead in black anchor this kitchen above, while white outer cabinets and counter tops provide a light and balance throughout the space.
The original pine tongue-in-groove ceiling was painted white. Charcoal coloured glazed rectangular tiles were installed for the backsplash. Hand blown glass pendant lights over the island provide soft and subtle lighting and a funky, chic look to the space. Black/charcoal tiled flooring with paint splashes of white and orange provide a touch of whimsy.
A two-sided fireplace in fieldstone already existed between the kitchen and dining area. Our fabulous challenge was in transforming the rustic fireplace feature into a new one-sided design with a modern look, and the result is a stunning new focal point in the home.
White Dolomite stone tile and traditional tin ceiling panels were custom installed on the vertical surfaces of the new modern fireplace to draw the eye upward and accentuate the height of the space. The kitchen cabinet door glass inserts were custom designed to coordinate with the pattern of the tin panels. These same high-polished tin panels were also installed in the powder room for a unique feature wall.
The pine hardwood flooring in the living room was retained as it coordinated with the stairs. The entire interior of the home was painted to provide a cohesive look throughout.
The end result is that the retained original finishes were seamlessly integrated with the new build work and features of this modern contemporary design update.
