Energy Efficiency of Home

If you have been wondering what you can do to lessen your environmental impact, reducing energy consumption in your home is a great place to start. Technology has improved significantly since many Calgary homes were built, and there are several potential upgrades that homeowners can make to improve energy efficiency.

With the rebates available from Energy Efficiency Alberta, there’s never been a better time to go green! There are great discounts available for you to improve your insulation, upgrade your windows, and switch to a tankless water heater.

Here’s what you need to know about the program:

How much can homeowners save?

With rebates available of up to $3500 for insulation, $1500 for windows and $1,000 for tankless water heaters, the savings are significant for people who choose to improve their home’s energy efficiency. Improving energy efficiency also saves you money on your utility bill, as you do not need to use as much energy to heat your home. For example, the average rebate for a tankless water heater is $500. But in addition to those savings, the average homeowner would also save $251 on their energy bill in a year. That makes for $751 in yearly savings and $1757 over a period of five years.

Can homeowners do the work themselves?

To be eligible for the rebates, you must use an approved contractor. The network of approved contractors meets specific requirements, including ensuring that they are a legitimate business and that they have the appropriate insurance. It also makes things simple for you, as the contractor facilitates the rebate application process on your behalf!

Kon-strux is proud to say that we are an approved contractor for this program.

How does the process work?

The first step is to select an approved contractor. If you don’t know where to start, we’ve put together a list of tips for choosing a reputable home renovator. Once you have selected a contractor, they will explain the options for the program and will calculate the energy savings and rebate amount. After the work is completed, the contractor is responsible for sending the necessary proof of paid invoice and before and after photos of the work to Energy Efficiency Alberta. Once approved, you will get a cheque in the mail! The process typically takes about six to eight weeks.

What types of improvements are eligible?

There are four types of significant home improvements eligible for the rebate program: insulation upgrades, drain water heat recovery, windows, and tankless water heaters. All of these improvements require that you get the work done through an approved contractor.

There are also some smaller upgrades you can do to improve your energy efficiency that can be eligible for rebates, though Energy Efficiency Alberta’s online rebate program. This includes things such as smart thermostats, LED lights, smart power bars, energy-efficient refrigerators, and more. Energy Efficiency Alberta has an interactive tool that shows you various improvements you can do and how much you can save in both rebates and energy savings

Here at Kon-strux, we love embracing technology and energy best practices, and we are excited to be involved in this initiative as an approved contractor. Ready to upgrade your home? Give us a call today at 403-769-1440 or email us at and let’s get started!
