Craftsman Style 1900’s house – Traditional Whole Home
This century-old Craftsman style home was completely transformed into a whole house interior and exterior renovation by Kon-strux Developments. This project was nominated in multiple categories for the Calgary Region SAM Builder awards. Kon-strux earned the 2013 SAM Award for Best Kitchen Renovation under $89,999 for this extensive kitchen makeover. A very dated galley kitchen was modernized by tearing down a section of wall to expose the home’s back windows and opening up the entire space to bring in natural light. This family needed an eating bar, dining area and a cook’s dream kitchen with custom drawers and designs that would help with storage concerns while celebrating the heritage of this century home. The bay window was transformed into a cozy bench which adds storage and seating. The eating bar’s tabletop is re-purposed from 19th-century church pews. The maple floors were refinished where possible, fixed, refurbished and matched perfectly where new floors were needed. Original baseboards and casings were salvaged, with the new matching to the existing to give a seamless feel. The renovation celebrates the architectural style of the time.
The basement is very open for children to play, and the ceiling is exposed giving a sense of height, making this space perfect for a big screen and watching movies. The accent walls are made of a 100-year-old board that was cut and laid horizontally, the wood having been painted in various colours by children years ago and salvaged from a local schoolhouse. Drop-down Edison bulb lighting throughout the basement is placed strategically between joists. The bathroom is a haven with in-floor heating, and heating in the marble seat and the steam shower floor. The basement fits in beautifully with the home and offers a relaxing third level that was previously unused. Following the redesign and overhaul renovation, the house feels larger overall. The renovation celebrates the architectural style of the time with trim work and re-purposed antiques but provides its inhabitants with modern luxuries such as a movie viewing area and sound system, wireless lighting options, as well as wireless in-floor heating.
