Traditional Home Renovation

This project was nominated in two categories for the 2014 Calgary Home Builders Association (CHBA) SAM Awards; in the category for Best Kitchen Renovation and in the Renovators Choice category for the feature stone walls. In this project, we transformed the entire main floor of this large 1980’s bungalow. The homeowners had a lengthy wish list that included enlarging the kitchen, adding storage solutions, raising the ‘sunken’ living room floor, creating comfortable front and back entrances, and updating the finishes to create a “WOW” factor throughout the home. The result is a stunning transformation.

The front entrance is a show-stopper with the natural Italian limestone veneer features, which adds a beautiful opulence to the home and creates a stunning first impression. The stone is featured throughout the home, also on the interior den wall, in the master bedroom, and spanning the entire living room wall. This creates a stunning backdrop for the fireplace centred between the custom millwork built-ins. The lighting fixtures from the chandeliers to the pendants and sconces are a circular oil rubbed bronze metal design in the same lighting family, this look carried through all areas for continuity of finishes. The colour palette and selection of warm finishes creates a calm feeling throughout the entire home.

The kitchen area was enlarged by removing a wall to an adjoining small sitting room off the kitchen, to incorporate that area into the spacious new kitchen design. Custom cabinetry was installed along two walls, providing ample storage and to incorporate the stainless steel appliances. A large ten-foot long island offers extra seating, ideal for large gatherings. The cabinetry is maple with custom profiled cabinet doors finished in an antiqued cream colour on all perimeter wall cabinetry, and contrasting brown finish on the island. There are ample pantry storage and functional pull-out features. Upper cabinets with glass inserts and lighting serve as art display areas. Quartzite countertops were selected for their beauty as well as easy maintenance. The wall behind the cooktop and hood fan features iridescent warm-toned brown and grey rectangular tiles.

A dropped bulkhead with recessed lighting and copper-toned light fixture centred over the dining table is a stunning feature in this home with cathedral ceilings. The living room sunken floor was raised to level with the rest of the main floor, visually expanding the space. Hardwood flooring was installed to achieve a seamless and easy flow through the entire main floor. Both entrances were revamped with built-in custom benches installed to add comfort and storage function. The master ensuite and main bathrooms were both given extensive facelifts, with custom cabinetry, countertops, fixtures and colour palette selections consistent with finishes throughout the rest of the home.
